ExTra! Final event and EMC Annual Conference 2009

A great success:
EMC Annual Conference and Final Event of ExTra! project
23 - 26 April 2009, Athens, Greece

This year’s EMC Annual Conference examined as final event of the three year EU cooperation project „ExTra! Exchange Traditions” different topics concerning the musical dimension of immigration and multiculturalism. It took place in the Theocharakis Foundation in Athens, Greece and was co-organised with the Greek ExTra! partner En Chordais. 75 participants from all over Europe and beyond discussed how culture and music can help to integrate ethnic minorities in a sensitive and respectful way.

Feedback by Katérina Stenou (Director of the UNESCO Division of Cultural Policies and Intercultural Dialogue):
"Thank you very much for this very stimulating conference! I was very happy to be with the real cultural actors and to learn more about new challenges and aspirations concerning the complex field of migration and its linkages with music as possible vector of mutual understanding and appreciation."

A comparative research study on music traditions present in today’s multicultural Europe will be launched within the frame of the ExTra! final event. It bears the title ’Music in Motion: Diversity and Dialogue in Europe’. It has been prepared by an Editorial Board of experts (Bernd Clausen – University of Würzburg Ursula Hemetek – University of Vienna, Eva Sæther – University of Malmö), in cooperation with the ExTra! Scientific Committee (Patricia Adkins Chiti, Alenka Barber-Kersovan, Gilles Delebarre, Reguina Hatzipetrou-Andronikou).
