Music Education as an Integration Factor for Immigrant Populations in Europe

"Intercultural music education can be done in many ways - even without introducing music genres from all over the world!", concluded Eva Saether, Senior Lecturer and Research Assistant at the Malmö Academy of Music (MAM), Sweden in her speech on strategies for music making in immigrant communities. She pointed out that it was more important to change the general attitude towards music education but the form or content of it. "Music education is more about learning from each other than learning about each other."

Gilles Delebarre, who is in charge of the education workshop programme at the Cité de la musique in Paris, introduced the concept of the summer academy which was part of the ExTra! project. The idea behind the academy was to enlarge the cultural horizon and professional skills of young musicians from European music academies by teaching them orally transmitted music from music traditions present in today's multicultural Europe.
The success of the academy confirmed the assumption that the exchange and dialogue with musicians with a totally different background and approach to music was definitely an enriching experience for everyone.
